Behind the Buttercream | Abigail

Hello!

I am currently writing this as I am on the phone to HMRC oh the joys of running your own business!

I am pleased to say that I will be starting a new blog series called "Behind the Buttercream", getting to know some lovely wedding industry friends, and about their business. I thought what better way to do it than introducing myself to you, so you will be familiar with the lady behind M+H Cake Company.

The Owner

Please tell us who you are?

My name is Abigail, I’m 22 and I live in London!

Tell us something that would surprise us about you?

Hmmmm, I don’t think anything is that surprising but I would say that the most thing people are surprised about is I used to be a post woman, for 2 months. I had the uniform and everything! I would walk over 12 miles a day and was terrified at the sound of dogs through the letter box.

My first ever wedding cake in 2016!

My most recent wedding cake to date

Hmmmm, I don’t think anything is that surprising but I would say that the most thing people are surprised about is I used to be a post woman... for 2 months. I had the uniform and everything! I used to walk around 12 miles a day, pounding the pavement!

If I'm not caking I'm...

If I'm not caking I'm most likely answering emails or taking a walk whilst listening to a podcast.

What is your background? Education, Work Experience

My background is libraries I know very random. Libraries actually helped to cultivate my love for reading a recipe books! I would collect as many baking books I could carry, borrow them and then bookmark the recipes I wanted to make next, I would slowly work my way through the bookmarks. I did not go to university, I went straight from A-Levels into work. It’s funny as my friends are not getting into work and I’ve been working for around 3 years, they’ve finally joined the crew.

My A levels were in Business, Economics and English Literature. I really do love business, current affairs!

The Business

How did I start M+H?

I have been making cakes since I was 10!

M+H grew very organically!

I loved baking an fell in love with watching TV shows like Ace of Cakes and GBBO! As I was a keen baker I had people around me naturally asking me to makes cakes for events such a birthdays and baby showers.

My first wedding I made for was a colleague, is was a cocktail favour wedding cake, every tier was a different flavour, very random and out there, but that loved it! I have many loves but two of them are business and cakes, after months of waiting and contemplating if I should do it or not I decided to take the plunge, and start my own business!

I'm in the wedding industry because...

I love small details, and that is what makes a wedding!

Another big factor is the fact that I want to encourage more ethnic diversity in the wedding industry. There is honestly a minuscule amount of black brides that appear on large wedding publications, and I would love to be apart of that change.

What is the best part of your job?

Seeing my clients reaction! When I give them their flowers or cakes that’s the best part to see their mouth wide open and the pure joy that beams of their faces!

Where are you based, do cater to weddings internationally?

At the moment I’m just in London and do weddings just on the outskirts.

What services do your offer?

  • Wedding cakes

  • Wedding flowers

  • Centrepieces

  • Sweet tables

My Advice for my Bride and Grooms

One thing I would need to have at my wedding and one thing I could miss out on

Honestly I think one thing I could not have at my wedding would be a cake... obviously!

What is the best piece of a you have for a bride in the planning process of the wedding?

You will soon be on honeymoon, keep pressing on, I completely understand how stressful this process can be!

How can brides get in touch with you?

Your more than welcome to drop me an email. The best way is to fill out my contact form on my contact page, that is where I can have a profile about you and your wedding and we can get things cracking from there.

What would your advice be to a bride in her planning process?

I look forward to hearing from you
